Breast Augmentation

What is Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation is a plastic surgery procedure to enhance the size, shape, and other breast characteristics.

Why Women Choose Breast Augmentation

Women choose breast augmentation for both medical and cosmetic reasons. Medical reasons to have a breast augmentation are to restore the size and shape of the breasts after a mastectomy. Some of the most common cosmetic reasons to choose breast augmentation include:

  • Breasts that are not the same size
  • Lost a significant amount of weight
  • Sagging, poorly-shaped breasts
  • Breasts that are small in relation to your body

What To Expect During a Breast Augmentation Procedure

During a breast augmentation, the plastic surgeon will place you under sedation. A breast augmentation procedure typically requires between 1 and 3 hours and is performed on an outpatient basis.

The plastic surgeon will create incisions either through your armpits, in the crease under your breasts, or between the areola and the breast tissue. The skin is pulled away to create a pocket. A breast implant is placed in the pocket and centered on the breast. The implant is then filled with saline, and the incision is closed.

Drainage tubes may be placed to help drain the excess fluid. You may need these drainage tubes for a few days. You may be given antibiotics to prevent infection and pain medication to make you comfortable.

Recovery From a Breast Augmentation Procedure

A breast augmentation procedure can result in swelling and bruising, which can last from 3 to 5 weeks. Your plastic surgeon may recommend wearing a surgical bra to support your breasts. You will need to avoid strenuous activity for up to 4 weeks.

What You Should Ask Your Plastic Surgeon

  • How many breast augmentation procedures have you performed?
  • What results can I expect from breast augmentation?
  • What are the risks of breast augmentation?
